nURRICANE AND EARTHQUAKE AT SAMOA. (Received May 22, 2-45 p.m.) Melbourne, Tuesday. Arrived-Messageries steamship Natal from Marseilles. (Received May 23, 12-40 p.m.) Wednesday. The Premier, Mr James Service, has telegraphed to the Ag-ent General instructing him to protest to the* Imperial Government against the proposed deportation of the Phoenix Park informers to Australia. Sydney. Tuesday. Arrived yesterday — Waihora from Auckland.
The Government have decided not to stop running the steam tramways pendiag Parliamentary action in the matter. A Bill has been prepared to legalise the use of steam motors. (Received May 23, 0*45 a.m.) Arrived this evening — Orient steamship Jehn Elder from Plymouth, sailed April 7. News has been received here that a destructive hurricane and earthquake occurred at Samoa on March 25 (sic), Many vessels were wrecked, and two deaths occurred from drowning.
