Mr Robert Pattie, of Riwaka has addressed the following letter to the JV. Z. Times :— Sir,— ln a late issue of the Tithes I read two letters signed •« G. M. Waterhouse," in which he comments on the action of those connected with the administration of the Property Tax. He says " they are striving to enforce a valuation far in, excess of the intentions of the Legislature." I hate no doubt that in some cases there may have been too' high a valuation put on some properties. Assessors do not claim to be infallible, and are liable to err like other people ; but I believe overvaluation will be found to be the exception and not the rule. Mr Waterhouse appears to think that ah appeal against a too high valuation would be a waste of time and a delusion, because " that upon the case being called on two Government valuators will spring into the witness-box, and with a light heart, and undeterred by any fear of prosecution- for perjury, will swear, &c." Now, sir, (as an assessor) I say that assertion is a vile calumny. Does he take us to be a set of unprincipled scamps, without such a thing as a conscience among us? Though we do not have the privilege of writing " Honorable " before our names, I flatter myself we know what honor is. One who can so deliberately cast such aspersions on a body of men whose duties have been of so onerous a nature cannot be so very immaculate himself. The Post of Friday says : — " A further step towards accomplishing the object aimed at by the creditors Of George North was taken this morniDg, when Mr Fitzherberl appeared before His Honor Mr Justice Richmond in chambers to apply for peruiiaaiuii either to gazetto the notice_.of .North's, bankruptcy in the newspapers, or po9t documents on North's premises calliug upon him to sbow cause why he should not be adjudi cated a bankrupt. After a brief conversation, his Honor said it would be quite sufficient to post the documents in question on the premises, and Mr Fitzherbert lef t, saying that this should be done to-day. At the next sitting of the Bankruptcy Court therefore — viz., on Monday next — North will be duly decl.arcd a bankrupt, unless sufficient cause be shown to the contrary. Lord Monteagle, a young nobleman of well known Liberal tendencies, has startled London society by declaring himself in favour of the abolition of the Upper House.
