The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 1879.

At the Magistrates' Court this morning, J. Bray sued E. O'Malley for £12 10s, being the price of 20yds of Adele' Island stone at 123 6d per yard, supplied to the defendant for the Port railway. Mr Percy Adam 3; | who appeared for the plaintiff, said he bad received a cheque from Mr O'Malley for £12, but that did not cover the claim, independently of costs. Judgment was given for the amount claimed and costs £1 17s. Tue Acclimatisation Society appear to be doomed to disappointment iv their efforts to stock our rivers with trout. Last year the young fry all perished, as the result of the water being turned off by some mischievously disposed person, and yesterday a niluiber of fish, which had been taken from the Maitai and put into the ponds preparatory to the ora beiug shipped from them, were found to have died from some cause not thoroughly ascertained Up to the present time we understand that about 300 objections to the valuations under the Land Tax have been received at the office. This seems a large number, but it must be remembered that the district is a very extensive one, including not only the Nelson Provincial district, but the whole of Marlborough and West land a3 far south as Jackson's Bay, Probably there will be still more objections received when the mails arrive from other parts; Ova readers are reminded of the enterment to be given at the Masonic Hall tonight in aid of St. Mary's Orphanage. A very interesting piece of work has been going on to day in Bridge-street in the removal of the steamer now in course of construction by Messrs Moutray and Crosbie from the foundry yard towards the Post Office, near which she will be launched. The morning was occupied in running her out across the street, and after dinner the more difficult task of slewing her was commenced. Every available inch of room being required for this operation, she was run out until her nose almost touched Mr Burrell's shop on the opposite side of the street, just snfficient space being, as it was thought, left to allow of her being turned, but it was found that the calculation was the least bit faulty, and so a small portion ot a protruding ledge above the shop window had to be sawn off. One of the mo3t enthusiastic of the employes at the foundry, whose whole heart was evidently in the work, was heard to grumble in somewhat powerful terms at the delay thus caused, and to give expression to bis conviction that it was a confounded nuisance that people would build their house 9 right in the way. The difflcutly being overcome, the work was proceeded with, and was making satisfactory progress at the time we went to press. It is hoped that the vessel may be got into the water on Saturday. We may here remark that the steamer is regarded by all who have seen her, including many competent judges, as a most creditable piece of work, and ono of which Messrs Moutray and Crosbie are fairly entitled to feel very proud.
