The annual dinner of the Port Fire'Brigade was held in their Hall last evening, when there was a fair attendance of members. The dinner was served up in excellent style by Mrs Hamilton, the menu including all the delicacies of the season. After full justice had been done to the good things provided, ,tbe cloth .was removed, and the usual loyal and patriotic toasts werp duly, honored. Other toasts followed, the usual post-prandial speeches being made. During the evening several capital songa -were sung, and the company broke up shortly after eleven o'clock, after Saving thoroughly enjoved themselves. A DEiEHiiiNED attempt at suicide was made this morning between ten and eleven ; o'clock by a man named Robert Bolt;' who came out as engineer in charge of the con- , denser on board the Edwin Fox, and received Mb discharge shortly after the vessel's arrival here, when he was paid off, arid since then has been drinking heavily. This morning he went down to the ship and had some breakfast in the deck house, aud was shortly afterwards found there by one of the seaman with a terrible gash in his thtoat, which had been inflicted by himself with a pocket knife belonging to the carpenter, and which he was -tearing open with his hand after: having dropped the ?knife. , Every assistance was rendered by Dr Farrelle, and the bleeding stopped as well, as it could be, and he ; was sent up to the Hospital, where he.now lies in a precarious state. The unfortunate man has a wife and family, in England. Thkius was quite a crush afc the theatre last night, when Madame Cora and Yal Vose gave the third of their popular entertainments, accompanied by the usual presentation of gif f s, some of which were eagerly coveted by the audience. To-day there was an afternoon performance for children, who were to be seen wending their way towards the theatre long before the, hour announced for opening the doors. Tonight there will be another performance, and.on Monday, night a grand entertainment,,. at which residents in the country will have an opportunity of being present, as a special: train ia to be (laid on. .., : r , _ . . j:-_ The annual report of,, the; Auckland ;fire brigade shows that there were thirfcy-9ix fees and five cases of incendiarism. ;.-,.;•.
