It is stated here that Mr Geo. M'Cullo^h Reed, the editor of the Otago Daily Times goes home for two years as Immigration Agent. It is also stated that Mr J. R. Oreighton on his arrival from San Francisco will assume the editorial reins of the New Zeulander.
On Satnrday all the places of amusement were crammed. Last night there over 5000 persons in Burtous Circus and nearly in the theatre. The amount of monpy taken at the gates at the Agricultural Show was £811 as against £737 last year. At the dinner in the evening the Governor was present and spoke at seme length on the advancement of the colony in matters connected with agriculture. At the sale of Mr Gilligan's racing stud yesterday there was a large attendance Danebury was bought by Mr H. Vallance for £500; Laertes by Mr Walker of Wanganui for £4, 5; Fiction by Mr Butler for £250; Mufti by Mr R. Mauson for £425; Lady of the Lake by Mr Walker for 95 guineasSongster by Mr Black for £275; Javelin was bought m at £775.
At the sale of prize stock, the bull Pnuce William realised 240 guineas; Morlft 220 guineas , Aramoa 100 guineas: White Butterfly 115 guineas
_ Wellington, Tuesday. The statement that Mr George McCullogh Reed has been appointed Immigration Agent for two years is confirmed; he expects to leave the colony next month. A singular case has just come to light It has been found that a settler named Wood at Wainui, Ornala Valley, seven miles from the Hutt, ha 3 has bad his sister, a violent lunatic, under restraint in his own house for over twenty years. Mr Mansford, R.M., was authorised by the Government to ascertain the truth of the information, aud on visiting the place he found where the lunatic was usually kept was a little den about six feet square, one side being occupied with a closet, the other with the creature's bunk. Mr Mansford said the case was a sad one. It is reported that the woman has been subjected to ill usage, but upon that point there has been no examination yet Woods is reported to be a very worthy and industrious settler
