GOOD TEMPLARS AND THE GENERAL SYNOD.

To tub Editor of the ' Evening Mail.' Sik— lt is very gratifying to the Temperance Societies of Nelson to be informed through the medium of your journal that the subject of temperance was considered by so important a body of men as compose the General Synod; also to find one of those worthy, gentlemen giving ihe laurels to Nelson as compared with Auckland for the absence of drunkenness. It is satisfactory to . know that from such an ecclesiastical stand- . point the subject is earnestly recommended to the clergy " with a view to the formation • of local branches wherever circumstances render it desirable." I rejoice, Sir, with many others to. think we have such a noble ..body of men, leaders in the cause of Christ, who are, wherever circumstances require (and in all my travels I have not seen the pjace they do not), ready to promote the Temperance cause. Much has been accomplished by the humble workers already enlisted, but vow with the assistance of our gifted friends we may well look for greater • victories. I sincerely hope our worthy visitors will find time to hold a public Temperance meeting in Nelson, and as one of the brotherhood of Good Templars I will promise to do all in my power to secure them a large audience.— l am, &c,

John Becken__am. _ P.S.— The Rev Mr Penny and Mr Hunter Brown have evidently been misinformed concerning the Good Templar ritual, and I hope they will join the Order, and be enlightened.
