The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1876.

At the Police Court this morning, Annie Ogden was charged with assaulting James .Ford, but as the prosecutor did not appear she was discharged. At a meeting of the parishioners of Christ Church held last night it was resolved almost unanimously, there being but one dissentient, to raise the seat rents from twelve to fifteen shillings per annum. At a special meeting of the City Council held last night to consider the assessment of the town ifc was resolved to adopt the old assessment. . It, was decided not to advertise the assessment, as ifc was already in force. A public meeting, for the purpose of forming a Christian Union, is to be beld in the Temperance Hall on Thursday evening next, afc which clergymen of various denominations will attend. A " monster sweep.", on the Christmas Derby to be run in November next; is advertised by Mr A. M'G-ee. Of the 500 tickets 100 have already been applied for, so that, those wiro desire to take part in ifc should.. secure tbeir tickets with as little delay as possible. "We are glad to learn thafc a number of rangers have been appointed throughout the country districts, and that the constables have received instructions to lay informations in any cases thafc may come under their notice of persons shooting pheasants or quail without a license*, or killing or trapping hares. Ifc is to be hoped that this will have the effect of checking, if nofc of entirely putting a stop to, the wholesale poaching that is known fco be carried on all the year round, and which is resulting in a scarcity of game where it should exist in quantities. To his audience, Mr Luscombe Searell's concert last night was mosfc enjoyable ; to himself, however, it must have been anything but satisfactory, the attendance being exceedingly limited. Those who did nofc avail themselves of the opportunity of hearing Mr Searell play lost a great treat, his performance, especially in " Mose in Egitto," being really magnificent. Tbe other pieces he played were also listened to . with great delight, ahd he was repeatedly encored. Mr Searell received very valuable assistance from a number of gentleman amateurs who are well known to concert-going audiences in Nelson, and whose singing is always heard with pleasure. The concert altogether was a really pleasant one, and the only regret is that a larger number were nofc present to enjoy ifc. The Nelson Directors of the Richmond Hill mine, accompanied by the Secretary, proceeded to Collingwood on Eriday to inspect the mine, returning yesterday. They express themselves much pleased with their trip, as they

found the ihaffc being vigorously pushed on, and the indications in it so far precisely what were expected. They have a very good set of men, including several Cornish miners, iii fact, the pick of ehe district. The work goes on day and night, three shifts of men having been put on. The shaft is roptny, being eight feet long by six feet wide ; on Saturday it was down to the level of the river, and though the rock to be gone through is excessively hard, it is expected they will make a foot a day, and strike the rich ore next week. A report having been circulated that the ore lately sent to the Thames for reduction was all that could be obtained at the outcrop, and that the lode ran out here, the Directors ordered the spot to be cleared of rubbish, and had some superb specimens taken out of the lode in their presence. There would .have been no difficulty in getting . out a ton . if it had served any useful purpose to extract mere ore from a spot not suitable for the location of the working shaft. A wedding, which, to judge from the display of bunting it called forth at the port, appeared %> possess considerable interest, was celebrated this morning, the fortunate bridegroom, being Mr C. Cross, son of Captain Cross, the harbor master, and the happy bride Miss Anno Green, daughter of Mr E. Green, of The Sands. The wedding party, which was a very large one, assembled at the "Wesieyan Church afc 11 o'clock, where the service was performed by the Rev Gt. S. Harper, after which they drove to the residence of the bride's father, where a sumptuous and elegant breakfast was laid out. In the afternoon the party returned to the Port, and the bride and bridegroom embarked on board the schooner Awaroa, which was towed from the wharf by the Lady Barkly amid hearty cheers from those who were assembled on .the wharf.. The wedding party took a trip in the Lady Barkly, wbich was to tow the Awaroa ten miles up the Bay. An accident occurred on the Port-road this afternoon to a man named Thomas Cavanagh, who was employed by Mr. ' Moutray in erecting the gasometer. In coming up to town he tried to step on tq the 'bus when in motion, but slipped and fell under it, and to all appearance was entangled among tho wheels, which were thrown off the line. Strange to say he sustained no more serious injury than a nasty gash on the arm and a severe bruise on the leg. He was sent up to the Hospital shortly after the occurrence of the accident. '- ■*•
