The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 22, 1875.

The prizes to children attending the City schools were distributed to-day by his Honor the Superintendent. Captain Rough was in the chair. The Provincial Hall was crowded with the children and their parents. We cannot this evening find room for the prize list, which must stand over until to-morrow. The preliminary firing by the members of the City Kifles for the choice of a representative for the Colonial Wimbledon took place to-day, when the splendid score of 99 out of a possible 112 was made by Sergt. Crossman, Private C. Moore second with 91, and Corporal D. Burns third with 88. Refulgent summer, attended by the sultry hours, has come at last. It looks as if we may now, for the season, bid adieu to chills and storms ; that ladies may array themselves in their lightest attire, and farmers look forward with confidence to an exceptionally good harvest. The frequent rains of the past three months were favorable to vegetation, but the warmth of spring was wanting, which rendered the season a late one. Late frosts destroyed the promise of a good season for seferal kinds of fruit, plums in particular, and early cherries were damaged by rain. But there will be compensatory advantages both to the gardener and farmer, and if the past spring be remembered for its storms, the coming summer will, we expect, be equally remembered for its fruitfulness. Intending competitors in the forthcoming regatta are reminded by advertisement that the Secretary of the Committee will be in attendance at the Custom House* Hotel to - morrow evening, from the hours of 6 p.m. to '7*45, to receive entries. The Harmonic Society will give a concert in the Provincial Hall tomorrow evening. A perusal of the programme will be sufficient; to induce all lovers of music to attend. The first part will comprise selections from "The Creation," "Elijah," and "The Messiah," and the. second will consist of miscellaneous music. The prizes will be distributed at St Mary's School by his Honor the Superintendent to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock. The sale of work held yesterday in aid of the Christ Church parsonage fund proved a success, far beyond the anticipation of the most sanguine of those who had interested themselves in> getting it up. Two stalls had been fitted up in the Parsonage grounds, and so adapted were the articles offered for sale to the requirements of the visitors, that they very ao>on presented a bare, and consequently to the ladies who presided at them, a most satisfactory, appearance. It is said, however, that there are a quantity of goods in reserve, with which the stalls will be dressed to-day. A substantial tea was provided at the moderate charge of sixpence a head, and those who supplied the good things with which the tables were laden did a capital trade, while the takings at the gate amounted to a considerable sum. During the evening there was glee singing by the members of the Christ Church choir, who received valuable assistance from numerous friends. This evening there is to be an open air concert, consisting of both vocal and instrumental music, and after our yesterday Vexperienee- we, can recommend all who wish to make useful purchases pr to enjoy a pleasant afternoon and evening, to pay a visit to the Parsonage grounds. As it is definitely settled that -the ocean cable, which ia to bring Ne^ Zealand Into direct telegraphic communication with the whole civilized world, will be landed in a small bay a few milea north of our city, and the end of it brought into the telegraph office to be erected in Trafalgar Street, \we presume the construction of this building will be hastened as much as possible. The tenders for erecting it were sent in on Monday last, and a few days will make knowu the successful tenderer. The upper floor will be apportioned entirely to the cable staff, and there ia. a special clauga-in the contract, that this portion of the building shall be firat completed. The two steamers bringing out the cable are expected to reach Australia ia . Feb., and it is probable the line will be lMd within the cofftract time, which ia in April j nex': f A more favorable spot for landing the cable than the one selected could not be desired. The soundings are regular all down the coast, with a »lean bottom, and the steamers with the cable can lie wifibia a hundred yards of the chore irbere It i« So I bs loaded,
