Naval Brigade.— A preliminary meeting to organise a Naval Brigade at the Port was held at the Custom House Hotel last evening, when a Committee was formed to canvass for names of intending members. From what we can hear we think it is likely to be a great success. The number required before the Company can be started is thirty, and it was stated that over that number had signified their intention to join. It is intended to form a battery somewhere near the entrance of the harbor on the Port Hills. Captain Marshall, who was present, afforded the meeting every information, and said that, upon the Company beiug formed, the necessary guns, arms, would be forwarded. A general meeting of intending members will shortly be held, when the Company wil' be formed. A most unjustifiable murder (says the Bruce Herald) was perpetrated in Milton ln9t week. A well-known twolegged ruffian aod buliy having; killed, maimed, or otherwise maltreated every member of his owu sex within bis reucb, suddenly turned upon his patient, long suffering, and innocent wife, and having felled her to the earth with one brutal blow, he (rampled upon her inanimate body until death released her from her sufferings and the violence of her cruel spouse. It will detract a little, perhaps, from the price of this paragraph when we mention that the offender ia a well-known game cock belonging to a Milton tradesman. The Auckland correspondent of the Christchurch Globe telegraphs as follows: — The bitter animosity between the bauks has led to some unpleasant results. One bank haß refused to dscount the bills of some firms doing large business, when presented by their own customers, merely because the firms in question had removed their accounts to other baoks. This necessarily damages tbeir credit, and causes inconvenience. The visit of the French man-of-war Vire to Port Chalmers has resulted in the Museum being enriched by a valuable collection. The presentatiou of chief intereat is a youug albatross in the down; given by one of the crew, M. De La Tromblays. As showing the value of this, it may be mentioned that in no other museum is there a young albatross in the down — not even in the British Museum. By proclamation in the Provincial Gazette, dated Jan. 13, his Honor the Superintendent declares that the imported birds known as '• house sparrows " may be shot, taken, or killed, in all or any parts or part of the province of Canterbury.
