Oamaru, Monday. A sad accident occurred in the Waitaki river yesterday, as Jennie Audersro, magicienne, and troupe were eros ing to tbe Canterbury side. The male members of the party walked across the bridge, but an express containing Jenny Anderson and all the properties attempted to ford the river above the bridge, piloted by a ferryman. The vehicle got into deep water aH'l capßtzed. The driver • was washed to a pile of the b'idgo and whs ' rescued. Miss Anderson (Mrs Mo 1 tun) was twice grasped while floating under tho bridge bu- her cloihinar pave way. An inquest vt»s htld todiy. Everything belonging to the troupe was lost in tho river, box continuing money, &c. The express horse and two perform »g dogs belonging to the troupe were drowned. General feeling here that crossing the river except in a ferry boat or by bridge, ihould be at once prohibited. Chbistchpech, Tuesday. The Jockey Clu»> have unanimously endorsed t!ie action of the Dunedin Jocko*' Club in the itisqualification of Mabel and Andrew Mitchell, tbe jockey who rode her, in the St. Andrew's Handicap. On Saturday afternoon whilst the volunteers were firing at the Parawai rifle range, Sergt Cleary, one of the markers, was shot, the bill striking him on the ehouldt-r blnde and coming out ot the fleshy part of the right arm, The wound is not considered dangerous bnt it is very painful Cleary was out registering a shot and cleaning the target, bat from some cause or other the danger flag was not observed from the firinggpoint. The wounded man was brought dowa the creek in a boat and taken to the hospital Wellington, Tuesday.
