LICENSING COURT.

WAIMBA. SOUTH. The first nnnual Licensing Court under th« new Act was held on Thursday the 23rd inst, at the Court House, Spring Grove, before Lowther Broad Feq., R M. and Hugh Martin Junior, John WaHis Bamicoat, and Fedor Kelling, Eeqs., Commissioners, when the following licenses were granted without opposition, but the Resident Magistrate said he would take the opportunity of cautioning publicans against eelling adulterated liquors for if they did so it would be a very strong point against them obtaining their licenses next year. Wholesale Licenses. — William White, Spring Grove ; and Phillip Kingcome Watty, Fox-hill.

An ordinary publican's license was granted to Thomas Martin, Spring Grove Hotel ; and accommodation licensee to John Jervis, Fox-hill lon ; William Boddington, Bell Grove Inn ; James Chaudlor, Wangapeka ; William Francis Fogden, Motueka Valley ; Henry Hndson Boundell, tiud Alfred Hodgkinson, Motupiko Valley ; Wm. Louden, Junction Motueka and Motupiko Valleys ; George Biggs, Ferry, Motueka Valley ; Wm, Henry Phillips, jun., Sherry ; Robert Minio Smith, Forest Jun ; Adolphus Wiesenhuverb, Top House ; James Fowler Flank, Wakefield j and John Taj lor, Baton. Bottle Licenses wero applied for by William Painton and Edwin lloAper, but were opposed by tho police and refused. The Resident Magistrate caid in the case of Paioton that he had ouce been convicted of allowing drink to be consumed on the premises, yet since that time numerous complaints had been made both by the police nnd others of his allowing the v<ry same thing to bo continually done. The Court did not feel disposed to grant him a license at all, but the applicant haviog stated that he would be put to a very severe loss if he had not a wholesale license, ss he was doing an up-country business the Court would grant him a wholesale license but should he offend against that, in all probability his license would be cancelled altogether. With respect to Hooper the same objection was taiscd of allowing drink to be consumed on tie pre mis. 8. The Resident Magistrate said ibat the Court would allow him a wholesale license as well ts Painton, and he could take it up or not as he chose.
