To The Editor Of The Nelson Evening Mail.
Sir, —l perceive in your yesterday's issue toy simple letter icautioning the electors that some of the party opposed to Mr O'Conor's election had been tbe means through which a scandal had been in circulation reflecting on his moral character, and which in hia absence; and on his behalf I was compelled to take notice of, which, together with some remarks made in the same article, have called forth a whole mosquito fleet of writers. I will pass by those'si_ned " James Avery,". "Charley," and "E. Snow," as the public may probably guess, from the style, as •_ do, where they had then:" Business done." The article signed." Nelsonian " requires more notice. He accuses one with endeavors to create jealousies and heart-burnings between the various members of the community. Of course he does, he sees it from a Curtis point of view, I from the O'Conor, but I am led to believe he haa more personal spite against myself than sympathy with either of contending parties, as his brilliant article finally concludes with his informing the " upper classes " that his Satanic majesty has found me employment for many years past. My only wonder is how a man who can really spell could deliberately write such dribble. I repeat again Mr Curtis' party have resolved to make it a party question that a gentleman (ate) haß ever appeared at our Committee Room. The better class of tradesmen have avoided us, and I repeat openly if Mr O'Conor is to be elected for the Superintendency it willl be by horny handed sons of the soil and the true labdrer and mechanic. I am, &c, " J. H.- Levien, Chairman'of Mr O'Conor's Committee, Sign of the Broken Ring, TrafalgarrStreet. ' .'. -"
