CEMETERY OR CATTLE RUN?

To tub Editor of tub Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, — I should like to be dlowed through the. medium of your columns to call attention to the state of the fences round the cemetery, throng!: the occasional paps in which cattle are at liberty to enter and room at large over ground that should not be subject to such desecration* This is not a matter affecting so much the wealthier classes of the comnvmitv, who, as a matter of course, take the precaution to protect the last resting places of their friends and relations, but there are others, of whom Tarn one, whose circumstances prevent their placing a fence round the graves of those they have lovel in life, and whose memories, now that they are dead, are still dear to them. To some of us, the words " Sscred to the Memory " are no mere formal expression, hut there are saddened hearts to which they convey a deeper meaning than that attache! to tlipm by the casual visitor to this " God's Acre," and it may be imagined how grating it is to our feelings to find that the flowers we have planted and carefully tended on what to us is really holy ground have been ruthlessly destroyed hy the hoofs or mouths of trespassing cattle. I sincerely trust, Sir, that it i.° only necessary tc bring this under the notice of the proper authorities to have so crying an evil at once remedied. I am, &c, **J Rachel.
