Nelson Hospital.— The report of the Select Committee appointed, to enquire into tbe management of the Nelson Hospital will be found in the fourth page of to-day's issue., Westport Eace^. — A telegram has been received from Westport stating that the Maiden Plate, Ladies' Purse, and Cheroot race were won easily by Messrs. Stevenson and M'Glashan's b.g. Patch. The Provincial Council. — In our yesterday's report we ommitted to mention that Mr. Gibbs motion, affirming that the £4,800 which formed Nelson's share of the Road Board Grant, had been apportioned " neither according to the intention of tbe Genera] As&errfbly, nor to the general satisfaction of the province " was carried by a majority of 8 to 6. The Cobden and Brunner Railway. —Among the passengers by the Gothenburg yesterday were Dr. Hector, the Government Geologist, and Mr^ Rjackett, the . Colonial Engineer, who passed through Nelson en route for Greymouth, the object of their visit being to decide upon the best line of ra-rfway from the Brunner coalmine to the mouth of the Grey Riv.er. Artizans' Association. — The programme of to-morrow evening's entertainment, the proceeds of which are to be given in aid of the destitute poor, has been published, and comprises a number of songs, readings, choruses, and instrumental pieces, the whole concluding with the farce entitled "Binks the Bagman," which has already been so favorably received by the Nelson public. Last Night's Entertainments. — There was no lack of amusement for the good people of Nelson last night, no less than thrfle entertainments of entirely different descriptions b c iu S offered to them.' To begin with there was the children's fete over which Mr. Crisp, of course, presided . The procession having paraded the town, the youngsters set to work at various games iv the paddock . kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. T. Harley, and by the afternoon they had mustered so strong that nearly a thousand partook of the tea provided for them. In tbe evening there was a public meeting followed by a concert at which Miss S. Crisp presided at the harmonkim in a most able manner, Mr. Augarde's performances on the violin also calling forth loud, approbation'from the audience. We are'particularly requested to state that a vote of thanks to Mr. T. Harley was unanimously passed for his kindness in granting; the use of his paddock for the children to amuse themselves in. At the Oddfellows'' Hall there was also an . excellent entertainment given, to a full house by the Star Minstrels, whose singing and : acting afforded an, immense amount of ajnusement to the crowded audience. There-was alsoa Quadrille Party at the Assembly Room, which was very well attended ; so thqt it will be seen that the evening, as well as the day, of her Majesty's Birthday was thoroughly enjoyed by both old and young in Nelsdnv ' ' : Mirage. — The Hawhe's Bay Herald of the 12th says that a most, beautiful! mirage was visible at sea early on Tuesday^ morning, resembling an island, with the hills, gullies, rocks, &c, most distinctly marked. It was rendered invisible,, about ni,pe. o'clock, partly by a jrqisty sort of cloud arising and enveloping it. • Five thousand : and' for.ty-fi.ve .depositsV were made in the Savings Bank of the^ Colony during- the— year- 1 870 , -• but- the withdrawals during the same period were so large as to leave only a' littfe vover twelve thousand pounds to the credit of the whole of the depositors' in the 'Colony.
