Sutherland Gold-mining Company. — Mr. Sutherland, we are informed, h;is returned from Auckland, where hsucceeded in purchasing a ten-stamper batiery with shafting for additional stampers, and iron wheel 36 feet in diameter, the whole to be landed at Blenheim v/harf, immediately, for the sum of £980. Nelson Auxilliary Fire Brigade — — At a meeting held at the Custom House Hotel, last, evening, for the cdectiou of officers, the following members were elected :— Mr. Joseph Garrard, Captain; Mr Thomas Freeman, Lieutenant; Mr. J. B. Calder, Ist Hydrant-man; Mr. J. Lukin&, 2nd do; Mr. Duckett, Ist Brauchman; Mr. J. Calder, jun., 2nd. do; Mr. J. Akersten, Secretary; Mr. J. Jacks, Treasurer, and 19 working members. Milner unanimously elected a Director in the place of Mr. Adams who had resigned. A vote of thanks was passed to the Directors and the meeting broke up. The members of the Cbristchureh City Council have presented Mrs. Duncan, the wife of the ex-Mayor, with an epergne and cradle. Three men have obtained £427 worth of gold in three months, at Orepuki, Otago. Some rich quartz reefs, of considerable depth, have been discovered south of the Molyneux, Otago. Letters have been received stating that Te ICooti's emissaries are now visiting the Bay of Plenty, and also advising the authorities to be cautious. It is stated by the West Coast Times that Mr. E. Barff has been presented with a requisition, bearing one thousand signatures, asking him to allow himself to be again nominated to represent the Hokitika district iv the General Assembly ; and further, that Mr. John White will also contest the seat.
