Turkey aud Greece concluded au alliance agaiust any Power threatening conquest of the East. The King of Italy has declared that the Roman States form part of the Kingdom of Italy. The French elections indefinitely postponed. There is a formidable insurrection in Algeria. The Pope has issued a feeble protest agaiust a plebiscite. Russia is making great warlike preparations, aud is massing troops ou her frontier. These demonstrations are supposed to threaten Turkey. The CEcumenical Couucil is dissolved. The Duke of Aosta, second son of thc King of 'ltaly, isa recognised candidate for the Spanish throne. Morton declines the American embassy. Parliament is prorogued till December 13. The New South Wales loan is successfully negociated ; the tenders accepted yield an average of £98 13s. 6d. The Cambridgeshire Stakes was won by Adonis ; Syrian sscond, Bonnie Swell third. The new French Loan is quoted at 3 premium. Negotiations for the entry of the Southern States of Germany into the German confederation are proceeding favorably, and also for proclaiming King William Emperor of Germany. Austria keeps clear of European complications. Heavy guns are beiug placed at Galle fortifications.
A coal bed of excellent quality has beeu found in Madras Presidency. Armstrong guns are being mounted at Aden and Perim. Famine is threatened iu Persia. The Government of India has voted £1200 to the Livingstone expedition. The Queen sanctions the marriage of Princess Louise with the Marquis of Lorn, eldest son of the Duke of Argyle. On the Madras railway a train was precipitated over a broken bridge into the river. The Rev. Mr. Seymour and wife; and several natives were killed. A Typhoon at Houg Kong did mueh damage to life and property. The Chinese are collecting troops iu the north, and placing guns on Tasker Forts, preparing for war. Prince Kung is not assassinated, as was reported. Street fighting has occurred at Yokohama, between French aud Prussian sailors. Mr. Ottywell is engaged in sending out material for the Canterbury railway. Mr. Duppa has purchased an estate in Kent.
