The Provincial Council of Marlborough, owing to its not being able to elect a Superintendent has V>een dissolved, and fresh elections will shortly take place. Mr. Michael Murphy has lately died at Spring Creek, IVhirl borough, at the advanced age of 100 years. A Tidal Wave. — Saxby was uot. such afool after all, for earthquakes are reported at Darmstadt, and other parts of Germany ; and later severe shocks are said to have occured at Sebastopol, When the last mail left Callao, the whole western seaboard of South America was in a state of panic on accouut of earthquakes which were predicted for the begining of October. Very high tides occurred in America about the 6th October, and great injury was done to property by the " tidal waves. " In this country the tides were not higher than on many occasions, but on the 3rd November an extraordinary high tide took place in the Thames, "which rose, atLoDdcn Bridge, to within eight inches of the highest point recorded. At St. Petersburg a great part of the town has been submerged, and damage doue to an enormous extent. No such flood has been known there for nearly half a century. ■ Wire Tramways are fast coining into use on the Thames goldfield for the purpose of conveying the stone from the more inaccessible of the claims to the mills. The lines are said to work in the most satisfactory manuer and the rapidity with which the trucks are sent on their journey and unloaded is a matter of general surprise. On a recent trip of oue of the Illinois river packets — a light draught one, as there were only two feet deep of water in the channel — the passengers were startled by the cry of " Mau overboard !" The steamer was stopped, and preparations were made to save him, when he was heard, exclaiming, "Go ahead with your darned old steamboat ! I'll walk behind you."
