The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11,1869. THE WANGAPEKA.
Matters at Wan gapeka still remain in statu quo and are' likely to continue so. , at all events until after Thursday next, when Mr. Domett, at the request of the General Governmeut, will hold an inquiry ; into the circumstances which have led to the opposition to the. survey. The matter has assumed so serious an aspect that it has become a case more for., the General than the Provincial Government to deal with, the Superintendent. therefore immediately upon the receipt of Mr. Broad's report of what had taken place, telegraphed the coutents of his letter to the Colonial Secretary, and the following tele- ; graphic correspondence has since taken place;— ;.. .•-:■-•:;■■:■■ ■!■ >.■'. .■><■■ ■■:''■ ; -•' The Colonial Seoretaet to the Supebesten- ,■• ■ •>:']- y: dent of Nelson.',- ... ,- ; Government have considered. your telegramiof : yesterday, with correspondence, to oppose survey ; of land at Wangapeka. At preeeDt Government cannot form an opinion ; whether land- in question is within or without a ' goldfield. If within- -a goldfield, miners having miners' rights have a legal right to the claims they have taken up, ' the sale being in that case invalid; if not within goldfield, the miners have no such right. Mr. Domett will he requested to report to Government on the subject; and Government think that until he has reported, matters should be left as they are. Tha survey shouldnot be proceeded with, and the land not proclaimed a goldfield. Please Jnfbrin W>ste Lands. We siucerely trust that those who are now opposing the survey will take advantage' of the opportunity thus afforded them of making known their grievances, and having the" whole affair thoroughly' sifted.
