There are 5429 Smiths who received dividends on various sums in the public stocks ; 2478 Browns are also among the distinguished quarter of a million, and 2190 bear the name Joues. The Jewish Record says that the synod of Jewish Rabbis, which has just been held, has recognised three new principles : — li individual authority in- religious matters j 2, the primary importance of free scientific investigation ; and 3rd, the rejection of the belief in Israel's restoration. The synod also recommends choral services and the use of the organ in the synagogue, and musical performances on Sabbaths and festivals.
