MR. CURTIS AT STOKE.
Mr. Curtis addressed a large and attentive audience at Stoke last night, when the chair was taken by Mr. Smith. Mr. Curtis commenced by commenting upon what had fallen from the other candidates, and, having exposed Mr. Gibbs' mis-stnte-nieuts with regard to the Land Office, stated that it was a subject of great regret that a gentleman who was a candidate for the high office of Superintendent should either be so grossly ignorant of what was taking place in the departments, or should be capable of attempting to deceive the electors for the purpose of injuring him (Mr. Curtis) as a candidate for the Superintendency. He then referred to the electioneering cry that was now raised by Messrs. Gibbs and Akersten, to the effect that the Superintendent's salary was too high, when iu 1867 they both of them voted that it should b8 raised to £800 a year. It was far safer to judge men by their actions than by their words. Mr. Curtis, at the conclusion of his address invited those present to put any questions on subjects on which they were not satisfied, but none were asked, and a vole of thanks being proposed bj Mr. Harley, and seconded by Mr. Rowbotham, was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
