The total number of Poles who are now in exile or in the mines in consequence of the late insurrection, is 140,000, among whom are 6 bishops, 3 prelates, and 218 priests; 37 clergymen have either perished on the field of battle or been executed by order of a court-martial, and about 200 more have been sentenced to imprisonment for various periods. The Repeal League Convention at ; Halifax, Nova Scotia, have passed a resolution affirming that the further continuance of Nova Scotia in the Canadian Confederation will be. but a daily progress to ruin, and that the only hope of commercial prosperity, national development, and permanent peace lies in close relation with the United States. The members of the Convention are urged to use every legitimate means to sever the connection with Canada, and bring about a union "on fair and equitable terms with the American Republic."
