Messrs. N. Edwards and Co 's steamer Charles Edward arrived at the Albion wharf this morning, at 7 o'clock, after a most exciting run rouud the coast with the John Penn. The latter left Nelson on Monday afternoon at 4.30 and the Charles Edward the same evening at 7.30; the latter sighted the Penn at daybreak on Tuesday and gradually diminished the distance between them until both boats were together off the Buller when the Penn dropped anchor, and the Charles Edward proceeded to Hokitika where she arrived at midnight. The Penn came in on tlie next morning's tide and both boats left again that night at ten, the Charles Edward having four minutes start and arrived at Greymouth a quarter of an hour sooner than the John Penn. They lift again on Thursday evening, but on account of the tide could not cross the Buller bar till 9.30 on Friday morning. Shortly after one o'clock the Penn cast off, almost immediately followed by the Charles, a neck and neck race ensuing for some minutes, but in spite of the most strenuous efforts, the paddle boat took the lead and arrived at Nelson two hours and a half before her opponent.
