Prospecting near Nelson. — Ifc would appear that the sanguine expectations held by the gentlemen comprising the Committee, appointed afc- a recent meeting to canvass the town for subscriptions in order to send out a party of men to prospect for gold in the vicinity of Aniseed Valley, have been doomed to disappointment. The public did not come forward and subscribe liberally, as Ihey should have done, towards so worthy an object, and the Committee abandoned the project in despair. Thus, probably, we should have heard the last of the subject; but Mr Field, rather than that this sbould be the case, has declared his intention of sending out a party, fully equipped, at his owu expense. Mr Field intends depositing in the Bank a sum of #160 to supply the wants ofthe party, whichi we .understand, will commence operations in the course of a few weeks. We sincerely hope the efforts ofthe gentleman will be crowned with success; and in thp, meantime he is deserving of the warmest thanks of all classes of the community. Concert. — The Nelson Harmonic Society gave one. of their quarterly concerts last night, which was as usual well attended, the Provincial Hall being crowded to excess. We are unable to give a full notice of ifc to-day, but may merely state that it was one of the most successful of these delightful entertainments that we have heard for some time. , The Wellington Weathercock. — Of all the fickle vacillating, unreliable newspapers that ever issued from the colonial press commend us to the Wellington Independent. This trustworthy journal was a staunch supporter of Mr. Fox last session, during the recess it veered round and was strongly in favor of Mr. Stafford on which tack ifc continued until last Tuesday, when, to the astonishment of its readers, it once more laid itself at Mr Fox's feet, characterised the projeedings of the late Ministry, whose ac'ions until then it bad upheld, as " reckless gambling with the lives and properties of he North Island settlers," and offered its' ' heartfelt congratulations to the colony'* >n the facfc of Mr Fox having once more resumed the reins of officer" Of course the >pihioris of a journal that shifts its ground" : n this shameless manner can have no height with the people of New Zealand, )iit we regret,, for the J sake of the press hroughput. the colony, that one of its nembers should make such a wretched e_> aibition of. itsel£ - r
