NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Friday, August 6. Present : all the members. Collector of Rates. The Board proceeded to elect a Collector of Rates and Inspector of Nuisances, for wliich there were eleven applications. The result of the ballot was that Mr T. Watts, was re-elected. Finance and Public Works Committees. On the motion of Mr Webb, Messrs Burns, Percy, aud the Chairman were elected to serve on the Finance Committee; and on the motion of Mr Burn, Messis Hooper, Akersten, 81-.ck, and Webb were appointed a Public Works Committee. Mr Percy wished to have an expression of opinion from the Board with regard to the duties of the Finance Committee, particularly with reference to the sum borrowed for the Bridge-street sewer. Ifc was far better that tbey should receive full instructions at once t than that members of the Board should get up at public meetings and make accusations against their fellowmembers. Mr Biack wished to know why £1,000 had been borrowed, when only £600 was required for the construction of tho sewer. Mr Burn explained tbat the balance was required for kerbing in Bridge-street, and for other matters. Mr Percy thought it was very judicious occasionally to overdraw their account, as by executing works at the proper seasou of the year, a large saving was effected. The Chairman stated that it was considered at the time that by borrowing the extra £400 a saving of 25 per cent, had been effected. Mr Hooper said that this question had been frequently discussed, and ifc had been decided that ifc was far better that the moneys should be laid oufc as they came in, than that they should lie in the bank at trifling interest. Mr Akersten moved, " That in the opinion of this Board, the repayment of the debentures for the £1,000 borrowed for the Bridge-street sewer, and other works, should be met oufc of the rates for the years 1 871-72." Mr Hooper seconded the resolution. Mr Webb moved, as an amendment, " That the Bridge-street speciai rate be set apart to repay the loan due in 1872." Negatived. The original motion was then put aDd carried. Iron Safe. It was agreed to purchase from Mr Percy an iron safe, for £25. Stone Step. Application was received from Messrs Adams and Kingdo for permission to place a stone step in front of their new building. On the motion of Mr Percy, ifc was resolved, " That the question of placing a stone step in front of Messrs Adams and Kingdon's offices be referred to the Public Works Committee, attention being called to fche late action of the Board in reference to the Masonic Hotel." Drain at the Port. Letters were received from Messrs Hooper and Dodson, with reference to a drain at the Pier Hotel. It was decided that if the applicants would supply glazed pipes, the Board would find the labor. Some other business of an unimportant nature was transacted, and the Board adjourned until Friday, 20fch inst.
