THE ANNIVERSARY OF CAPTAIN COOK'S LANDING.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — Whilst your readers are tolerably well, informed and alarmed about the sth of October Saxby prediction, I notice that the New Zealand press is very silent about another remarkable day in October, viz: the 18th. That day, sir, is the centennial anniversary of Captain Cook's landing in the Colony. It is certainly a notable day and worthy of mentioning and celebrating, and I should suggest that a befitting way of celebrating tho same would be the usual orthodox holiday and dinner. If there is to be a procession we could vie very well with our Northern friends, for as we mighfc socially join with our Wakapuafca and Motueka friends as decidedly friendly natives; their procession might more appropriately terminate with the Maori captives in chains escorted by all the paraphernalia of war. Seeiug that we have more reason to rejoice in this anniversary than those daily exposed to wars alarms, I trust that yon will ventilate this subject and do all honor to it with the pen in this provincp. Tours &c, One op Captain Cook's Admirers. August 2, 1869.
