Having declined to do >: either, he was informed by Mr. Fox that he would be removed from the conomaudj. but to spare his feelings, he would have the option of resigning. The telegram; vweut.on to siate that he had decided to resign; this, however, appears to be an terror, ...as ••will be seen from the following letter -from Major Brown to Mr. Fox, which- was published in yesterday's Independent:—' 1 Sm,-. — I have the honor to acknowledge your letter of this date, me that the Government caunot continue me hi the commaud I hold at Taranaki, and that the Government wish to consult my feelings, and, if I prefer resigning the command, wish to leave me the opportunity of doing so; and to state, i« reply, lihat I beg to decline the opportunity afforded to me-by the Government of resigning the command. — I am, &c, Ch as. Brown."
