We may mention thafc creat alacrity was displayed in- making preparations for subduing the'fire, and that in less thin two minutes; from tlie' first alarm being given, the. hose, which is kept -•in tbe pillar at the corner of Trafalgar and Bridge Streets,; was laid; on up the street and in readiness to pour forth its volume of water. The New ' Ministry.— We understand that Mr. G-isborne, late Under Secretary, has resigned his office, and has been appointed Colonial Secretary with a seat in the Upper House. Mr Fox acting as Premier without office. No man in New Zealand can possibly be better, acquainted .with the routine of the. office than Mr. Gisborne, he having been connected with it for nearly twenty years. On Friday afternoon he delivered his maiden .speech' in the Legislative Council, in which' he stated tliat he and Mr. Bell had been appointed to the Executive Council and' had taken the oaths and their seats accordingly. Rumor says that'the office rendered vacant by Mr. Gisborne' s resignation will be be-; stowed upon Mr. John Knowles, clerk to the Superintendent of Wellington,
