ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL WELLINGTON.

The Kangitoto anived this evening* from Melbourne, with the English mail. - The mail,, by the Malta, arrived at Adelaide on Saturday, June 5, at noon, and reached Melbourne on the Bth. London, Apri1 ...23. The Queen is at Osborne. In the early part of the mouth her Majesty returned to London, and held a drawing-room at Buckingham Palace. She visited Bartholomew Hospital, accompanied by Princess Louise. Her Majesty, during the autumn, intends spending two montli3 in Ireland. Prince Leopold's contiuued illness causes anxiety. The Prince aud Princess of Wales were • present at an English cricket-match, at Constantinople. An official dinner was given at the British Embassy. Their Royal Highuesses visited the Grand Vizier, and lunched at his residence. They expect to return to England in May. The Sultan presented the Princess with his portrait, set iv diamonds, valued nt £80,000. The Irish Church Bill was receiving consideration in committee. The second readiug of the bill legalising marriage with a deceased wife's sister, was carried by a majority of 99. Mr. Gladstone announced tbat friendly negotiations were goiog on with Russia in respect to Central Asia. Australian preserved meats are rising in public favor. The stocks were exhausted, and enormous orders booked, and the demand spreading in provincial towns. The Australian banks have been accused by tbe Times of departing from banking principles in their wool transactions. Nineteen mercantile firms have signed a protest agaiost the practice, At a meeting of the Colonial Society, Mr. Westgarth read a paper on the relations of the colonies to the mother-country. A warm discussion followed, in which the Marquis of Normanby, Sir W. Benison, aud Lord Alfred Churchill, took part. Mr. Verdon was elected a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The emigration movement is proceeding vigorously. Three hundred aud twentyseven avtizans and their families from East London, left on the 13th April, for Cauada. After a public breakfast at the Midland Statiou, on the 20th April, 450 discharged dockyard working-raen sailed from Portsmouth, Government granting free passages. Meetings have been held in the Metropolis agitating for Government aid towards emigration, and the Government have promised to give any necessary assistance. The sum of £3,500 has been placed on the Estimates for presents made by the Duke of Edinburgh while in Australia. Archbishop Manning declines to allow petitions praying for release of Fenian convicts to be placed upon the doors of Catholic churches for signature. Mr. Charles Dickens was entertained at a grand banquet at Liverpool on the completion of a course of readings; seven hundred ladies and gentlemen were present. The boat race on the Tyne, between Taylor and Cooper, for £100, was won t by the latter. Mr. Justice Wilde has been raised to the peerage under the title of Baron Penzance.
