The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 1869. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT GREYMOUTH.
Our telegram containing tbe news of the fire at Greymouth was cut short yesterday by the breaking down of tbe line. We this evening give it in full : — Wellington, llth June, The Greymouth correspondent of the Evening Post, telegraphs as follows :-rA Destructive Fire broke out at Greymouth this morning at 3 o'clock. The fire commenced at Johnstou's, Melbourne Hotel, which together, with the following buildings were totally destroyed: — Bank of New South Wales, Union Bauk of Australia, Bank of Australasia, Flaunery's Hotel, the residence of Mr. Perkins, barrister, the premises of Mr. Trist, blacksmith, Mr. Badger, painter, Messrs. N. Edwards & Co's store, the shop of Mr. Broadbent, jeweller. Messrs. Hamilton aud Nichols, jewellers, Thompson aud Smith, merchants, Morris Levy, draper, Forsyth and Masters, ironmongers, Mr. C. Hunter, ironmonger, Mr. Charles, tobacconist, Masonic Hotel, Bank Hotel, and several other buildings gutted. Damage estimated at £60,000. We are glad to learn from a private telegram received iu town to-day that all the books, securities and treasure ol the Union Bank of Australia have been saved.
