CAPITAL AND LABOR.
To thb Editor of the Neison Evening Mail Sir, — I siaw in one o£ your recent papers an extract from the English papers, under the heading "Alliance of Capital and Labor," wherein it was mentioned that a'large' colliery in the North of England was successfully carried on by means of allowing every man and. boy employed in the colliery (amounting to some thousand individuals) to buy shares, <md thus become partners in the concern. The scheme appears to have been attended with unwonted success. . Some of the coalmines of thia. Province have been tinkered with now- for many years under divers management, but all /Entailing a loss to the various speculators. Could-not the system alluded to be tried in one of these; ! the > Pakawau for instance, tbiat beiiisc the .' nearest -to Nelson proper, and most likely to prove advantageous to the " greatest "number." "There are plenty of men, it is presumed.'who would take: part of their wages in share's; arid this would- prove whether the mine would become a payable concern. It
has never had a .fair chance yet, and this perhaps would settle the " vexed question." Perhaps some of your speculative readers and all who are interested in the advancement of the interests of-this beautiful province, will work out the hint,^ and devise a well-founded scheme for the carrying out such a desirable purpose. I am Sec, E. T.
