OUR COAL-FIELDS.

To thb Editor of the Nelbon Evening Mail. Sir— Hearing so much about the West Coast railway, I often think that Nelson would find a very large market for the coal at the many ports of China, India, Japan, &c, From my experience gained by many years trading there in the mercantile marine I know, that a coal like that obtained on ttie West Coast only requires putting into the market to make it appreciated. Then again, our light vessels could conveniently load in Nelson, there being no port on the West Coast available for vessels such as bring our goods from home drawing from 14 to 20 feet of water coal loaded. What a boon it would bave been to the •late P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Co., if their ocean steamers could have obtained the Grey coal instead of the N.S.W.; the same would apply to the immense steam fleets of China, India, Japan, &c, lam, &c, Sinbad.
