PROVINCIAL NEWS.
The will of the late Mr John Jones has beeu proved in Duuedin. The persoualty in the colony has been sworn as being under £27,000. The plant of the Hokitika Evening Star has been purchased by Messrs Jones, Cobb, and Harris, and is now published as the Star of the Evening. It is said that the price paid was £1650. The Dunedin Star has also been sold, and bought by Mr. Henry Driver for £675. The Otago Daily Times says:— "The Dunedin Volunteer Artillery received by last mail a challenge to a friendly rifle match from the Second Company of the Honorable Artillery Company of London, which has created a considerable amount of interest amongst our Volunteers generally. The H.A.C. is, although strictly a Volunteer Kegiment, one of the oldest military bodies in England, and is the only Regiment, besides the Foot Guards, and^the 3rd Buffs, possessing the privilege of marching through the City of London, with 'bayonets fixed, colors flying, and drums beating.' From the number of valuable prizes gained yearly by this corps for rifle shooting, they doubtless have in their ranks many good shots. The conditions are 10 men aside, Government rifles and ammunition. Ranges, 200, 500, and 600 yards ; seven rounds at each distance ; Hythe position ; Wimbledon targets and scoring ; pull of trigger not more than 6lbs ; no sighting shots." One of the most extraordinary discoveries that, in the annals of quartz mining, has ever taken place in the Colony of Victoria, has been made at Pleasant Creek. Ail extensive and paying horizontal reef lias been discovered 350 feet below one formerly worked at 560. The existence of these horizontal or flat reefs gives quite a fresh interest to quartz mining. — West Coast Times.
