RESIDENT MAGISRATE'S COURT.
Before J on_r Sharp, Esq., I_.M., Saturday, April 24. James Shore was charged with haviug in his possession a dog without a ticket. Defendant haviug takeu out a ticket since the service of the summons, was fined in tbe lowest penalty of Is. and costs. H. Black was charged by P.C. Dixon, witb using threateuiDg and abusive language to him, when in discharge of bis duty, on Friday, 16th inst. Defendant was bound over to keep the peace for three months, himself in £20 and two sureties in £10 each. Ann Hilton v. Catharine Hargreaves. Claim for £4 ss. 7d. for washing, £2 os. for work done, aud £1 for goods supplied. Iu this case there was a considerable amount of hard swearing on both sides, but as defendant could produce no receipts and a very primitive system of bookkeeping was produced by plaintiff to prove tbe debt, judgment was given for plaintiff for amount claimed, and costs, 9s. Drunk and Disorderly. — At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Jonathan Mears, charged with this offence, was fined 10s and costs. Lunacy. — Frederick Akersten, charged with beiug of unsound mind, was on the testimony of Dis Sealy and Vickerman committed to the Lunatic Asylum. Mesmerism. — Dr. Carr advertises that he wili give his farewell seance to-morrow night instead of to-night, in consequence of the weather. Wo observe that a committee of gentlemen have consented to be present for the purpose of supervising tbe proceedings. Organ for Christ Church. — We understand that the Committee appointed at the parish meeting for tbe purpose of collecting subscriptions towards the organ fund for Christ Church, aro to meet to night, at Mr. Mabin's warehouse, Bridge street, at half-past seven. The Duke of Edinburgh. — By our telegraphic shipping intelligence we learn that H.M.S. "Blanche sailed from Lyttleton for Dunedin yesterday at noon. It will be remembered that H.R.H. was to proceed to Dunedin in this ship, as the Galatea's draught of water was too great lo allow her to enter the harbor. Te Kooti. — The following telegram has been received in Wellington, by Mr Cooper, of the Native Office, from Henaro the native chief of Hawke's Bay, who had undertaken to make enquiries and ascertain the truth of the report of To Kooti' s death. To Mr Cooper, — The death of Te Kooti is confirmed by tbe Mohaka people. He was shot dead by Rutene — Henare Tumoana. The Telegraph. — We understand that telegraphic communication has been interrupted throughout the day, aud that
it is uncertain when the line may again be in working order, as in cousequence of the continued rain the rivers are so swollen that the lineman attached to this station is prevented going out to make the necessary repairs. Agricultural Statistics.— -The return of Agricultural statistics of the Province of Nelson, in February, 1869, shows the following totals:---Exteiit of laud broke u up but not under crop, 10,369 acres; In wheat, 2,574 acres, estimated produce, 40,273 bushels; In oats, 1,819 acres, estimated produce, 36,241 bushels; Io barlev, 956 acres, estimated produce, 20,317 bushels,- In bay, 3,440 acres, estimated produce, 3,943 tons; Iu permanent artificial grass, (including land ia bay) 30,122 acres; In potatoes, 823 acres, estimated produce, 4,634 tons; In other crops, 899 acres. VoLUXTEEKS FOE KING TITAKOMB AU. — Some short time since we copied from tbe Australian papers a notice issued by the so called Chief Secretary at Bau, Fiji, inviting Volunteers to take military service under tho King of Bau, for the purpose of assisting Lira in subjugating certain tribes in the inleriorof his country, and thereupon to sign a declaration faithfully to serve tbe so-styled King Thakombau, iu return for which the voluuteers were to receive large grants of land. Iu the New Zealand Gazette of 17th inst. a proclamation appears under the band of tiie Colonial Secretary, in which tbe Governor Si by aud with the advice and consent of his Executive Council" warns all her Majesty's subjects in New Zealand, that all British subjects who shall without, the leave of Her Majesty in that behalf obtained, enter into such service, or engage others to enter into such service will be guilty of a misdemeanour, and will render themselves liable to prosecution according to law.
