MAORI CHURCH AT WAKAPUAKA.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Maii,. Sir, — Some years since a church was built by the Maories oif Happy Valley with the understanding that the windows and doors were to be provided by the Government. This has not yet been done and it has struck me that the following petition may possibly have some reference to the state of the building. I am &c, Fiat Lux. " To the Water Prince, the son of our Queen Wikitoria. Him we mean from out of the Big Ship now coming. "0 Prince! salutations. Thou passest the Stone Line that shutteth out the great waters from us, and hy the entrance of the setting sun thou enterest into Wakatu. "Enter into our valley, O Prince, and behold the church. Kereopa Pakeha doth eat its eyes. " Unto us and unto our reverend men did they they — the money-holders of Wakatu — promise eyes and yet for many years are we still blind. Send us O Royal Prince, send our church eyes and a mouth. " From the Children of the Pa now living in Happy Vali_et."
