At'the recent Isle of Man regatta, a •pleasing novelty was introduced in the •usual regatta proceedings, namely, a boat race, open to lady competitors only. "The prize consisted of two handsome gold -lockets— a locket for each oarswoman as the boats were to be pair-oared. The -winning boat (the Duchess) was rowed by two young ladies of the island — Miss Stevenson and Miss Kewley. ' I see,' said a young lady, 'that some booksellers advertise blank declarations for sale. I wish I could get one.' — 'Why?' • asked her mother. — ' Because Mr G. is too •modest to ask me to marry him; and perhaps if I could fill up a blank declaration with the question, he would sign it.' A sporting quakerput his bets thus: -« Friend Edward, thee thinks thy horse is faster than mine. I value -my opinion at :20 dollars. Now, -it thee values thy opinion at'the same rate, we will put the i money together and ask our horses what they think of -it, and leave the conclusion 'to them.' A boy from the country was recently taken into a gentleman's family. 'One -afternoon, just before dark, after having been called up to the drawing-room, he came down into the kitchen, laughing im- ■ moderately. 'What's the matter-?' cried i the cook. ' Why, dang it I .' said he, ' there «re twelve on 'em up there who couldn't 'light the gas, and they had to ring for me •to do it.' A young man out West was intrusted with the money to bring his father home -a good family sewing machine. He •carried off a neighbor's daughter to ■Chicago, married her, and brought her home.
