The Nelson Evening Mail.l THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 1869.
The unsatisfactory state of our postal service is becoming every day more and more apparent. Owing to the unfortunate position in which the Panama Company found themselves, at the latter end of last year, and notwithstanding the strenuous exertious made to impart to it a kind of galvanized existence, — which recent telegrams inform us have proved abortive ; we are now reduced to one service, that via Suez. We have, however, at present no connecting link between "New Zealand and Australia, as the contract for the InterColonial Service expired with the year just closed; so tliat, at the present moment, New Zealand is without any foreign or home postal service at all. This is a most undesirable state of affairs, and regular and prompt postal communication is a matter of such paramount importance, that we cannot too strongly urge upon the Government the necessity of, at once, calling for tenders for the performance of the inter-colonial service.
