The Hobart Town papers express strong •liopes that salmon will be seen in the Derweut or the Plenty in the season which has . now commenced, and they ask all travellers on those streams or their bauks to watch carefully for signs of the ' interesting strangers.' Au effort 18 being made in Tasmania to have the district watered by the river . Hellyer prospected for gold during the season. A correspondent of one •of the local journals states that he found •gold in that river in 1860, and that nothiug has since been done to follow up the discovery. He crossed 78 creeks, all running into the Hellyer, in the course of his wanderings, aud fouod gold at the mouth of every oue of them within the influence of the stream of the main rirer. The Gladstone Observer says : — ' The late eclipse (so we learn from a passenger per Boomerang) was total at Cape York on the 18th August. The totality lasted about 11 minutes (?), and during that time- rose-colored flames were seen projecting like ridges of mountains beyond 'the dark edge of the moon. The stars were plainly visible. The effect upon -animals was singular — dogs howled and ;ran frightened into the houses, and fowls •went to roost. The terror of the blackfellows was extreme, although they had been told of its approach.' The Governor of Victotia has presented 4he Humane Society's medal to a boy earned Blacken, for heroic conduct ou board the Nelson, in saving three persons Jr&m drowning.
