THE ELECTION.

To the Editor of the Nei&on Evening Mail* Sir — Mr Edwards is reported by you to have said at the late nomination — * the best way to judge what a man can do is to observe what he has done.' I quite agree, and would like to ask, what has Mr Edwards done? Perhaps we shall be told, for the hundredth time, that he has made a lot of money. Wei), through a loDg run of fortuuate circumstances, aud not through any very wonderful ability, he has made money. But still, I ask, what has he done for the community of which he has been a member during the last twenty-four years? What has he doDe either publicly or privately? What has he done for society generally to entitle him to be our representative man? Has he ever done a single act that ha can point back to, a3 giving him the ghost of a claim upou the suffrages of the people on this occasion? Under the present circumstances of the colony, the election of a representative becomes a serious matter, and I would urge upon my fellow-electors so to regard it. Mr Shephard has given evidence of his ability as a politician, especially upon the subject of finance, which is, after all, the j great question of the day; and he would not go into the House as the representative of this or that particular interest, but as a representative of the people. We have already too many men in the house in the CAPITALIST INTEREST. Let us see to it that we get a people's representative on the present occasion. Yours, &c, One of the People. i
