LATEST FROM THE FRONT.
The following telegrams have been received since our last publication. Wellington, December 8. Telegrams from Napier state that the friendly Maoris Lave ceased pursuit of the rebels, and have returned, partly through exhausting their scarcity of supplies, and partly disgusted with Colonel Whitmore; the expedition has. virtually collapsed. Tan u er's Cavalry have also returned to Napier. Wellington, December 9. The steamer Wanganui arrived early yesterday morning, and left again at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The greatest consternation existed there— The Wauganui brought 40 passengers, mostly women and children. The people of Wangaaui are inclosing a large space round the towu as a citadel and refuge, at a cost of £400, the same being raised by subscriptions. A movement in aid is talked of here. Lambert has received letters from Australia stating that General Sir Trevor Chute may be expected daily to arrive from Australia, and that Lord Belmore is willing to send troops from Sydney.
