During his tour in this colony, the Rev. "Father Hickie is said to have collected £1450 for the establishment of a Catholic University iv Ireland. In California he collected £2500, and in Victoria £1700 for the same object. From a recent return published in the New Zealand Advertiser, it appears that the area of the Auckland goldfields is about 4280 acres, the population 16,000, autl the monthly yield 7000 ounces, worth about 50s an ounce, or about 5s per week for the population. The population in the Ross district is about 3500. with a monthly yield of gold of about 5000 ounces, worth 76s 9d per ounce, equal to £1 per week. The Manager of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, Mr Clifford, has reported to the Council that 724 young trout were hatched; three of the number were deformed, and two of the trout had since died.
