The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1868. TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE. HORRIBLE NEWS FROM THE EAST COAST.
Wellington, November 12. 9 a.m. The Evening Post published the following telegrams, from its own correspondent at Napier: — Napier, Nov. 11, 6.30 p.m. The Success has arrived from Poverty Bay. That place has been sacked and burnt by Te Kooti; 33 settlers were murdered, including Captain Biggs and his family. Horrible atrocities were committed, the women being burned and the children frightfully mutilated. The dead bodies of the women were thrown to the pigs of the Hauhaus. The settlers who escaped have arrived in Napier, where the excitement is indescribable. I will send further particulars immediately, a report being hourly expected. The attack took place at 3 a.m. yesterday, at a distance of 4 miles from the township. The number killed is doubtful, but supposed to be 28 Europeans and 9 friendly Maoris. No vessel was in port. The Success was on her way to Auckland, and was caught and brought back by a boat, in order to take the settlers to JNapier. I believe the Superintendent has not received any despatches. The Extra published by the Wellington Independent gives further particulars of this horrible affair: — At 3 o'clock on Monday morning, the ex-prisoneis entered Poverty Bay, and burned the homesteads there, murdering in cold blood 28 persons. Many others are missing. Those who survived the massacre have taken refuge at Turangui. Another attack is hourly expected, and the whole country is in a blaze. Amongst the killed were Major Biggs, his wife, child, and servant; Captain Wilson, his wife, children, and servant; Messrs Dodd and Peppard and servant; Mr and Mrs Nairn and child; Mrs M'Culloch and child; Mr Caddie and Mr Pedbury; Lieut. Wash, with his wife and child. The bodies were mutilated, and that of Mrs Nairn was burned after having been tomahawked. The Tawera sailed for Napier with the women and children. The Success sailed with the other families on the same day for Auckland. This fine district, saye the Independent, has been wiped out through the criminal laches of the Stafford Ministry,
