MEMORIAL. To his Honor OSWALD CURTIS, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Nelson. THE MEMORIAL of the undersigned INHABITANTS of Nelson respectfully represents — That the financial condition of the Province of Nelson, as described by your Honor in a letter published in the newspapers is such as demands the attention of the Government and the people, particularly as it respects the current expenditure of the province compared with the current revenue. That a reconsideration of such expenditure is requisite in consequence of the fact set forth by your Honor, that by reason of some mistakes the available revenue ofthe province will fall short of the amount estimated at the beginning of the financial year by about £35,000. That your memorialists are informed that, in addition to this large deficiency there will be a further and serious decline in the ordinary revenue of the province, still more reducing the amount actually available for the service of the year. That, considering these facts and seeing that nearly all public works have been suspended throughout the province, your memorialists are impressed with a sense of the necessity that exists for remodelling the estimates or appropriations to such an extent as would bring the revenue aud expenditure to a satisfactory equilibrium. Your memorialists are also desirous of strengthening your Honor's hands in any proceedings'which you may deem advisable to take for the purpose of effecting the desirable object, and to that end would respectfully suggest that a meeting of the Council — official or non-official — should be convened for the purpose of considering the present state and prospects of the finances of the province; or that such other course should be taken as to your Honor shall seem most fitting in the existing emergency.
