RETRENCHMENT.
To the Editor op the Nejlson Evening Mail. Sir —As nearly all the public or Government works have been stopped and the workmen discharged, would it be impertinent to inquire if the staff of officials has been reduced? It is usual when a regiment is disbanded to include the officers. Canterbury some time ago made, and Wellington, according to last night's Mail, is about to make, the necessary reforms and reduce the number of useless gentlemen about the Provincial Offices. Wellington ie about to abolish the Provincial Engineering department; now, as that is a department which was forced upon the then Government here, why does not our Superintendent try his hand in that direction? Yours, Sec, A Taxpayer. October 21.
