Tuesday, September 22. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
A motion by the Hon. Col. Kenny to the effect that the Governor would cause the Militia Act, 1885, to be brought into operation in the North Island, was agreed to. The adjourned debate on the question that steps should be taken to enrol for three years' service a small but efficient force with which to keep down native insurrection and to preserve the peace of the colony, terminated on the motion being agreed to. University Endowment Bill read a third time and passed. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The Civil Service Act Amendment Bill (Pensions) read a second time Distillation Bill read a third time. The adjourned debate on Defence and Native affairs, occupying nearly 50 columns of Hansard, was again adjourned. Wednesday, Sept. 23. HOUSE, OF REPRESENTATIVES. In answer to Mr Travers whether Government intended to make any inquiry into the conduct of Col. M'Donnell, Mr Stafford replied that he did not think it would conduce to the public interest to give a reply to the question. Mr Travers's Crown Lands (Nelson) Leasing Act Amendment Bill was read a first time, Mr Baigent and Mr Parker declaring their determination to oppose the bill in every way. The Escheat Bill, Offences against the Person Bill, Petty Sessions Bill, and Distress and Replevin Bill read third time. The debate on Native Affairs was again adjourned. Thursday September 24. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. After the passing of several bills a stage, and a discussion of a variety of questions, the debate on Defence and Native Affairs was resumed and vras again adjourned at midnight.
