NEW ZEALAND PARLIAMENT.
Friday, September 18, LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The Hon. Mr Holmes brought up the report of the Tariff Committee. The Adulteration of Food Act Amendment Bill was read a first time. An amendment debate on the Defence Force was adjourned. The Canterbury Rivers Bill and the Marriage Act Amendment Bill were read a third time. The Conveyancing Charges Bill was read a second time, the Hon. Mr Holmes saying that the Conveyancing Ordinance should have beea altered long ago, as it was evidently an injustice to the public to leave the law in such a state that a half per cent, could be charged on large amounts never calculated when that ordinance was passed. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Major Atkinson asked the reason why the purchase money for the block of land bought in 1859 of Teira and others, at the mouth of the Waitara, had not been paid, stating that Government at present held the sum of £31,000 to the credit of Taranaki for such purpose. Mr Richmond replied that the Government thought it had been settled by the Weld Government, and it had come quite accidentally to his knowledge that such was not the case. The Publichouses in Disturbed Districts Bill read a third time, and several bills read a second tune. The want of confidence debate was concluded, with a majority of 7 for Government, Mr Wells being present, and voting for the Ministry.
