Singularly enough, the extraordinary ■wave phenomena which recently occurred in New Zealand, was felt in Scotland, some months ago. In the Montrose Standard of May 22nd, under the heading of .' Strange Phenomenon,' we find the following paragraph: — On Tuesday morning last, the tide at the shore receded about 30 yards on the sloping beach, and about four feet in perpendicular height in tbe harbor, returning in two or three minutes to the former elevation. By the sudden reflux of water, some of the boats moored at the pierhead were considerably damaged — the painters having broken — they were, dashed against one another, and one or two floated out to sea before they could be secured. Such an occurrence has not taken place in this quarter within the memory of the ' oldest inhabitant,' and has caused a good deal of speculation amongst the fishing population here. Jack Baker being examined iv au important'case, counsel found it extremely difficult to extract the whole truth from him. His ingenuity and ignorance combined enabled him to evade the question. At last the lawyer, losing all patience, exclaimed, ' Why, Mr B — do you prevaricate so much ?' Jack, supposing he referred to his peculiar manner of utterance, convulsed the court and audience by replying .indignantly, 'I would like to know bow: a fellow can help prevaricating, when i c.ba« lost, three of his front teeth?'
