Three young men, sons of a farmer residing near Lilydale, Victoria, have been suffocated through sleeping in a badly ventilated room with a charcoal fire. The room was a new one, without a chimney, and damp. The young men, not being aware of the danger, made a charcoal fire, and went to bed, and were found dead in the morning on the door being opened. The losses of the Australasian Marine Insurance Company for the last half-year amounted to £14,000. It may be interesting to Volunteers to state, in reference to the paragraph in the last telegram of European news received by last mail: — 'New South Wales won the rifle match by two points; Sergeant Lynch of Sydney takes the first prize' — that the match referred to was the simultaneous rifle match fired in March and April last. The match was open to all British and colonial riflemen, and was supposed to take place simultaneously in all parts of the world. . The competition was at 500 and 600 yards, ten shots at each range (without sighting shots) three times over; any rifle, any position ; Wimbledon targets and scoring ; each competitor to take his two highest scores to make his aggregate score. Mr Lynch's two highest scores were 79 and 76, out of a possible 80 in each case, making a total of 155. 1 What are they ga'en ta dae wi' Sir Robert the noo, for a' his gran' doin's in Abyssinia?' ' Troth, John, I cauna jist say; .aiblins they'll mak' him a Peer.' 'A Peer ! -bout, man; they canna dae that.' 'An', what for no 1 Sure the Queen can mak'Vny ane ajpord ?' 'Ah, weel a wot she' Van; but if she war to mak' him a' the Lords that ever waa, still he'd be nae-peer!'
