Sir J. Y. Simpson states that in the old town of Edinburgh there are 13,00 families, consisting of 60,000 individuals, living in one-room houses, and that 1500 rooms are the abodes, day and night, of from five to fifteen persons. About 120 have no windows^ and 900 of them are cellars.
*-.. .Breech-loaders, after all, are no novelty. At a recent meeting of the Royal Archaeological Institute, Brigadier-General Lefroy exhibited a ' curious breech-loading, smooth-bored, match-lock arquebus,' which bore on it the date 1537, and appears to jmve belonged to Henry VIII.
