A Paris newspaper reports that at a recent court ball given in that city the American Minister, General Dix, was attracted by the gorgeous uniform of a Belgian officer, and had a long conversation with the wearer. Napoleon is said to have laughed at the spectacle, for the officer's uniform covered only a secret police spy.
A contemporary's correspondent at Washington begins his letter with the following observation:-' This has been a week of great cry and of very little wool.' Great cry in the political metropolis of the United States is usual. Bnt what of little wool ? We suppose that of the many colored gentlemen whom the partiality of the Congress must have attracted to Washington, an uncommon few had been having their hair cut. Miss Amabel Heighington lays down her * Shelley' with a sigh, and thinks mankind must be greatly altered since the poet wrote 'Nothing in the world is single.'
A young'^fellow once offered to kiss a Quakeress—' Friend,' said she, « the must not dp it.' ' Oh, by Jove I but I must,' said the youth. 'Well friend, as thou hast sworn, the may do it ; but thee must not make a practice of it.'
'I say, Clem/ cried two disputing darkies, appealing for decision to a sable umpire ' which word is right — di-zactly or de-zactlj?' — The sable umpire reflected a moment, and then, with a look of wisdom, *I can*t tell per-zactly.
