The Hawkes Bay ,Herald of the 18th instant, states that a fire occurred that morning about four o'clock in Chaucerroad, Napier, by which six houses were totally destroyed, — nothing remaining of them but the bare chimney stalks. We are unable to gather any definite intimation as to the cause of the fire, which "originated in a house occupied by a person known as * Black Harry,' Two of the houses belonged to Mr. M'lntyre, and were, we believe, to have been sold by auctiou this day. The other four houses were the property of Mrs Robinson, Messrs Flynn, Mulherne, and Maloney. We do not know if any of the loss is covered by insurance. The substance of a verdict of a recent coroner's jury, on a man who died in a state of inebriation, was — 'Death by hanging — round a rumshop/ 4 Honesty is the best policy,' said one Scotchman to another who had narrowly escaped hanging for robbery. 'I know it/ said the other, ' for I have tried baith sides of that question.' ■" Papa (improving the occasion at lunch) 4 Now, look, Harry, the circumference of this cake is equal to about three times the diameter, and — ' Harry : ' Oh, then, pa, let me have the c'cumf'rence for my share.' The cart(e) before the horse — the bill of fare at a horse banquet. y- A couple in an American paper, announcing their "marriage, added to the notice-— c No cards— -nor any money to get them with.' ■' V '
